Red Blood Cells (RBC), Urine

check icon Optimal Result: 0 - 2 /hpf.

Red blood cells can enter the urine from the vagina in menstruation or from the trauma of bladder catheterization (a procedure used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions). A high count of red blood cells (RBCs) in the urine can indicate infection, trauma, tumors, or kidney stones. If red blood cells seen under microscopy look distorted, they suggest kidney as the possible source and may arise due to acute inflammation of the kidney, typically caused by an immune response (glomerulonephritis). Small amounts of red blood cells in the urine are sometimes seen in young healthy people and usually are not indicative of any disease. Often, the urine looks normal to the naked eye. But when checked under a microscope, it contains a high number of red blood cells. In some cases, the urine is pink, red, or the color of tea, which you can see without a microscope.

What does it mean if your Red Blood Cells (RBC), Urine result is too high?

Elevated Red Blood Cells in Urinalysis: What Does It Mean?

When a urinalysis shows elevated red blood cells (RBCs), it can be a cause for concern, but not always. While it may sound alarming, there are many potential causes for this finding, and most are not serious. It’s important to understand the context of your overall health and any accompanying symptoms to determine whether further investigation is necessary.

Common, Non-serious Causes:

One of the most common reasons for RBCs in the urine is intense physical activity. Heavy exercise, particularly activities that involve impact, can temporarily cause blood in the urine, which often resolves within a day or two without treatment. In these cases, the presence of RBCs is usually transient and harmless.

More Serious Causes:

However, when elevated RBCs are due to underlying health conditions, it may indicate a more serious issue. Some potential causes include:

  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): A UTI can irritate the urinary tract, leading to blood in the urine. Other symptoms often include pain or a burning sensation while urinating.

  • Kidney or Bladder Stones: These solid deposits can form in the kidneys or bladder and may cause bleeding when they irritate or scrape against the urinary tract.

  • Kidney Disease or Infection: Conditions like glomerulonephritis or kidney infections (pyelonephritis) can damage kidney tissues, leading to blood leakage into the urine.

  • Cancer: In rare cases, blood in the urine may be a sign of cancer in the kidneys, bladder, or urinary tract. This is typically accompanied by other symptoms such as unexplained weight loss or frequent urination.

  • Enlarged Prostate (in men): An enlarged prostate can press on the urethra, causing blood to appear in the urine.

  • Genetic Conditions: Certain diseases, like sickle cell anemia and cystic kidney disease, can also result in blood in the urine.

  • Injury to the Kidneys or Urinary Tract: Trauma from accidents or surgery can cause bleeding in the urinary system.

Medications and Other Factors:

Certain medications, such as blood thinners, can lead to blood in the urine. Additionally, some people may have RBCs in their urine without any obvious symptoms or related health issues.

Next Steps:

If an elevated red blood cell count is found on your urinalysis, it’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further tests, such as imaging studies or additional blood work, to pinpoint the cause. In most cases, the issue can be treated effectively, particularly if the cause is something like a UTI or kidney stones.

Remember, while blood in the urine can be concerning, it’s often due to a benign condition, especially if there are no other accompanying symptoms. Your healthcare provider will be the best resource in determining the cause and appropriate next steps.

What Healthmatters Members Are Saying

5 stars rating

I have been using Healthmatters.io since 2021. I travel all over the world and use different doctors and health facilities. This site has allowed me to consolidate all my various test results over 14 years in one place. And every doctor that I show this to has been impressed. Because with  any health professional I talk to, I can pull up historical results in seconds. It is invaluable. Even going back to the same doctor, they usually do not have the historical results from their facility in a graph format. That has been very helpful.
